About Matt Kelly
Matt Kelly is a jack of all trades musician in the Chattanooga area. From leading worship to gigging with multiple instruments to writing music, Matt is a great example of what a true and hard working musician is like.
When talking about why he created GCMG, Matt explained, “I had the idea for Gig City Music Group in 2024 when I noticed that people kept complaining about the same things (lack of opportunity, closed doors, gatekeeping, small demand for local music) and I thought, “You know, I think I could do something about that.” So I set out initially to build an app that would connect musicians. Oh ignorant 2024 Matt… Creating the app I envisioned was much more complicated and expensive and out of reasonable order for the business. So I began to think about other things I could do.”
“Since the beginning, my goal for GCMG has been this: I want Chattanooga to be the most fulfilling place in the US to be a musician. Not the highest-paying, not the biggest population of musicians, not even necessarily the most gigs or most infrastructure or the highest production quality or anything like that. No, I want musicians who put down their roots here to be connected to the nutrient-rich soil of an established, collaborative, uplifting, creative, unified scene. And I want that scene to grow as Chattanooga grows. Or what if we even led the growth?”
“I also want to give local music’s brand a facelift in Chattanooga. There are amazing musicians here who are putting in the work, who are awesome humans, and they deserve a more professional brand. So I’m working to position GCMG to be a driving force for the establishment of some more professional infrastructure, collaboration of music and art related organizations, and the building up of individual musicians’ businesses.”
